A News Scroll Style Activity Feed

For this week’s design challenge, I created an activity feed as a browser extension.

Scrolling feed updates are integrated into the browser. The user can add updates from any number of apps.

I wanted to create a way for users to receive feed updates from multiple sources in one place while still allowing the primary focus to be on something else. A browser extension came to mind because when I’m browsing online, I like to get notifications about messages and other activity, but I don’t like having to switch between apps to view/resolve them. Having a browser extension that supports feed activity from an array of sources that is also interactive saves users from having to switch between many apps.

Users can log into multiple apps through the extension such as Facebook, Trello, messages, email, Dropbox, and so on. Users can also view/resolve notifications right from their feed. The extent of this interaction depends on the app and the type of notification.

The feed scrolls continuously to display new updates unless the mouse hovers over the feed — then it stops to make it easier to interact with notifications. Scrolling resumes once the overlay is resolved and the mouse leaves the feed.
