Old Products, New Look.
A product page that is minimal and modern despite the products being anything but.
I wanted to enhance the antique shopping experience because, often, the online stores for antiques feel as old as the products themselves and that can distract a buyer’s attention away from the products.
I wanted to create a design with a modern feel without being boring. I wanted the buyer’s eyes to go straight to the product and it’s key details while still taking delight in the presentation of the products.
Font Choices
I chose to pay homage to the vintage products with a serif font that still works great on digital — Playfair Display SC. Playfair brings elegance to the page that matches the products being advertised while still being very readable and easily paired with modern sans serif fonts.
Because I wanted these product pages to be all about juxtaposing antique and modern, I chose Droid Sans Mono for the body text. Droid Sans is a common sans serif font for mobile apps. It offers great readability and is very modern. I gave it a vintage twist by choosing its monospaced cousin Droid Sans Mono.
Color Choices
I gave myself a little creative freedom here. I think this design would’ve worked well with just whites and grays, but choosing varying pastel colors made for a more fun animation and added a bit of retro to the overall feel.
Animation Choices
I chose to have the furniture and text scroll off the page while keeping the background in place (though the colors change, but again, they change in place). I wanted to separate the vintage-styled products and text from the modern setting by having them move separately from each other. I have the squares rotate to give the scroll a mechanical feel, almost like the squares are gears that crank the current products out of view and the new products into view.
